The striped threadfish ( Trichogaster fasciata , syn .: Colisa fasciata ) is a labyrinth fish that is widespread on the Indian subcontinent and counts among the " Western threadfish ".

features

With a total length of up to twelve centimeters, the striped gourami is the largest of the four species of "Western gourami " included in the labyrinth fish genus Colisa . The basic color of the elongated body ranges from a light mixture of green and ocher brown (this corresponds to the basic color of the females) to a strong reddish brown in adult males. Two narrow white chinstraps extend from one to the other lower edge of the eye. Ten to twelve, depending on mood, light to dark blue vertical bands begin in the area of the gills and spread to the tail fin root . From the rear end of the eye to the point where the caudal fin begins, there is a distinct, dark band that, again depending on the mood and situation, can break up into a series of prominent or pale points. The anal fin of the females appears slightly bluish, has a yellowish edge in the area of the hard rays and is rounded like the dorsal fin . Sexually mature males have significantly larger fins and their dorsal and anal fins are pointed. Your anal fin glows turquoise blue and is lined with bright red. The chest and throat are dark blue to almost black. The caudal fin of both sexes is round and slightly indented; males show whitish to bluish dots.

Fins formula : dorsal XV – XVII / 9–14, anal XV – XVIII / 14–19.

ecology

Striped threadfish were spread so far across the Indian subcontinent by humans directly (release) and indirectly (networked rice cultivation) that their original home can no longer be determined. Today they are in the plains along the Indian east coast ( Coromandel coast ) and in the entire northern lowlands of India (states: Tamil Nadu , Chhattisgarh , Madhya Pradesh , Rajasthan , Punjab , West Bengal , Haryana , Jharkhand , Meghalaya , Assam and Manipur ) as well as in the neighboring states Bangladesh and Nepal detected. Nothing is known about their life in rivers. Evidence comes from alluvial land and floodplain areas, deltas and cultivated land (rice fields, calm canals). Foam nests found in nature are large and mostly laid out between vegetation. Apparently parts of plants are also built into the foam nests.

Reproduction

For reproduction, the males build a foam nest under which the eggs are laid. Striped Gouramis operate the parental care as pure father Family (details below Gouramis ).

Importance to humans

In their homeland, striped threadfish are regularly available as live, freshly dead or dried fish and as a component of fish meal. Since their first importation and first breeding by the animal dealer Paul Matte , Berlin, in 1897, striped threadfish have been popular but not regularly offered aquarium fish .

Systematics

The first scientific description was made in 1801 by Bloch & Schneider as Trichogaster fasciatus . " Tranquebar , India" is given as the type locality . The only type specimen is missing. In scientific work, too, there were repeated confusions with the closely related Colisa labiosus (Day 1877), the thick-lipped threadfish . With this sister species , which is widespread as far as Myanmar , the striped threadfish has some meristic values in common and fertile hybrids are known. But because there are just as many separating characteristics and clear differences in the genetic material have been determined, both species are recognized as valid . For the problem of belonging to the species, see the discussion on honey gourami and thread fish .
