Paul Oscher (born April 5, 1950 , Brooklyn , New York) is an American blues singer, songwriter , guitarist, pianist and harmonica player.
Life
Paul Oscher started playing the harmonica at the age of 12 when his uncle gave him a harmonica. At the age of 15 he performed as a duo with guitarist and singer Little Jimmy Mae in black clubs in New York. In the mid-1960s he met Muddy Waters at the Apollo Theater and when the Muddy Waters Band had no harmonica player in 1967 , he stepped in . Muddy Waters took him into his band and he played in this formation until 1971. At that time he was living in Muddy Waters' house, together with Otis Spann , from whom he learned to play the piano.
After separating from Waters, he formed his own band under the name Brooklyn Slim . His band played with Big Joe Turner , Doc Pomus , Victoria Spivey , Big Walter Horton and Johnny Copeland , among others . They went on a European tour with Louisiana Red .
In the 1980s he retired from the music business and pursued a bread-and-butter job, but returned in 1992. After a US tour with Jimmy Rogers and the Muddy Waters Tribute Band , he recorded his first album (The Deep Blues of Paul Oscher) in 1995. With the subsequent recording Knockin 'on the Devils' Door , he already received a nomination for the WC Handy Award .
Today Paul Oscher tours as a solo artist or with a trio. He is also currently working on a book about his experiences in the blues business. As a former sideman of Muddy Waters, he inspired many young musicians, such as Rick Estrin , Jerry Portnoy , Paul deLay and William Clark .
