Paul Joseph deLay (born January 31, 1952 in Portland , Oregon , † March 7, 2007 ) was an American singer and harmonica player .

Life

He was born in Oregon , but grew up in a music-loving family in Milwaukee . He began playing the harmonica at the age of eight after listening to Paul Butterfield . His role models were Big Walter Horton , Little Walter Jacobs and later George "Harmonica" Smith and Charlie Musselwhite . He took piano lessons and wanted to teach himself guitar and drums, but he soon realized that the harmonica was his calling.

In the 1970s he played in a band called The Brown Sugar Band, which performed mainly in the Portland area. In 1978 he founded a band that performed under his name, with which he accompanied Sunnyland Slim and Hubert Sumlin, among others . In 1980 he devoted himself to expanding his knowledge as a songwriter. Throughout his career he avoided using blues clichés in his songs.

His biggest problem was his addiction, and when he gave up alcohol he turned to cocaine . He was arrested for drug trafficking and jailed for three years, where he wrote a large number of songs, which he released on some albums after his release in 1995.

In the 1980s and 1990s, he performed at the San Francisco Blues Festival , the Pocono Blues Festival, the Long Beach Blues Festival, and the San Francisco Harmonica Festival.

In 2007 Paul deLay died of leukemia and the long-term effects of his addiction.
