Johannes Janett (born April 17, 1729 in Tschlin , † February 27, 1803 in Ust-Solicha ) was a Swiss Reformed pastor .

Life

Johannes Janett was born on April 17, 1729 in Tschlin in the Lower Engadine in the canton of Graubünden as the son of a farming family. His mother died at the age of just under two and Janett was raised by their siblings until he was 15. He attended the village school in his hometown. After both his uncle and the three local pastors had died of an " epidemic " disease, according to Janett , the desire arose in him to become a pastor himself. After a long hesitation, the father, who needed his son as an agricultural assistant, consented to the son's request.

Johannes Janett attended the Collegium Philosophicum in Chur from August 1749 to July 1750 , where he familiarized himself with the Moravian Brethren . In Bern he studied at the Reformed Academy from 1750/1751, and in 1751 passed the examination of the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod to become pastor. The exam was not admitted, however; the synod gave the reason that Janett was too young, although he had exceeded the age required for the examination and there was a shortage of pastors. The real reason was his pietistic orientation caused by the fraternity.

Two years later he was able to take the exam, but it was not until June 13, 1754 that he was accepted into the synod in Ftan and given the right to serve as a pastor in Graubünden. In the time between the examination and acceptance he worked as a tutor and court master in Zernez . After being accepted into the synod, however, he did not take over a pastorate, but worked as a tutor in Luzein after 1756 , where he stayed for two years.

In 1758 Janett took over the pastor's position in Zernez, but at the same time continued to work as a private tutor. Health problems arose after two years. In 1763 he gave up the pastor's post and moved to Neuwied that same year . There he was asked to take on a pastor's position. He passed this wish on to the Brethren. Janett was soon chosen for this assignment. In September 1764 he traveled to St. Petersburg via Lübeck .

In St. Petersburg he was faced with a 2000 kilometer journey that took him to Sebastianowska ( Saratov in Russia ), where he was to become a pastor. On February 21, 1765 he was greeted by the congregation there, and on March 10, he held his first service. For 38 years he was also active in Golyi Karamysch , Klutschi , Popowska and Ust-Solicha.

In January 1767 Janett married Anna Katharina Reuter from Kassel . During these years he was repeatedly asked for support from parishes in colonies of Volga Germans , at times he also worked as a mediator and mediator between colonists and state authorities. In 1797 he was appointed senior member of the Protestant church system in the Saratov colonies.

In 1802, however, his health deteriorated again. In early 1803 he suffered a faint attack from which he did not recover. Johannes Janetts died on February 27th, 1803, on March 3rd he was buried in the church in Ust-Solicha, where he had worked until the end. Janett is considered to be the first Swiss pastor in the Volga colonies.
