Paul Rabbow

Paul Rabbow (born November 14, 1867 in Stettin , † January 19, 1956 in Göttingen ) was a German classical philologist .

Rabbow studied in Göttingen and Bonn , where he received his doctorate in 1897 under Anton Elter , Franz Bücheler and Hermann Usener . From 1898 he was then employed by the Thesaurus linguae Latinae in Göttingen . As part of his work, he revised the text of the Quintilian Declamations 277–377 and excerpted grammarians from late antiquity, including Tiberius Claudius Donatus , Aelius Donatus , Porphyrio , Servius and numerous other Scholiasts . From October 1 to December 31, 1899 he worked as an assistant at the merged thesaurus office in Munich. After his job expired, he continued to work on a fee basis for a few months. Finally he received the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute for 1900/01 .

After his return, Rabbow lived in Göttingen, mostly as a private scholar. From 1901 to 1903 he was an assistant at the university's philological seminar; later he led the Greek style exercises of the proseminar as a lecturer and gave Graecum courses in Kassel . He lost his fortune during the inflation in 1923. He then received temporary support from the Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft and worked for the thesaurus every now and then, for example in 1929 to excerpt the Itala .

Rabbow published mainly on education in ancient Greece. His writing soul guidance. The methodology of the retreat in antiquity is considered a basic work and is scientifically received to this day.
