Paul Speck (Byzantinist)

Paul Speck (born December 19, 1928 in Mönchengladbach , † August 18, 2003 in Berlin ) was a German Byzantinist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Bonn in 1948, he studied at the universities of Bonn ( doctorate in 1956, state examination in 1957), Cologne and Thessaloniki . After completing his habilitation in Munich in 1970, he worked there as a private and university lecturer until he became professor of Byzantine Studies at the Free University of Berlin in 1979 . There he founded the Poikila Byzantina series in 1981 . He retired in 1993.
