Ioannis E. Kalitsunakis

Ioannis Emmanuel Kalitsunakis , German mostly Johannes E. Kalitsunakis ( Greek Ιωάννης Εμμανουήλ Καλιτσουνάκης , * 1878 in Chania ; † October 2, 1966 in Bucharest ) was a Greek Byzantinist and Neo-Graecist.

After attending school in Chania, Kalitsunakis studied at the University of Athens from 1894 to 1901 . From 1902 to 1904 he went to Germany on a scholarship from the Cretan State , where he first studied at the University of Jena , then at the University of Berlin philosophy, classical philology and education with Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Möllendorff , Eduard Meyer , Wilhelm Schulze , Friedrich, among others Paulsen and Adolf Harnack studied. In 1905 he was appointed lecturer in the local seminary for oriental languages , and in 1918 professor. During the First World War he was temporarily interned in the camp for political prisoners in Holzminden in 1916 . In 1924 he returned to Greece, where he was appointed full professor of ancient Greek philology at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Athens, a position he held until his retirement in 1948. 1926 was a founding member of the Academy of Athens . From 1928 to 1939 he held a professorship for Byzantine Philology at the University of Berlin while retaining his chair in Athens. In 1937 he was dean of the philosophy faculty at the University of Athens. In 1938 he was a founding member of the Society for Cretan Studies (Εταιρεία Κρητικών Σπουδών), in 1947 he was President of the Academy of Athens. From 1949 he taught again Byzantine and modern Greek philology at the University of Berlin, which appointed him honorary professor in 1953. In 1961 he was president of the Philological Association Parnassos (Φιλολογικός Σύλλογος Παρνασσός). In the same year he was a member of the committee of the first international congress on Cretan studies. In 1966 he died of a heart attack on a trip as a delegate from the Academy of Athens to the Congress on the occasion of the centenary of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest. Kalitsunakis was awarded the Grand Commander (Ανώτερος Ταξιάρχης) of the Order of the Phoenix .
