life and career

Franz studied Ancient and Modern Greek at the University of Munich and was able to successfully complete this course in 1828 with a doctorate . Two years later he completed his habilitation at the same university .

The Bavarian King Ludwig I appointed Franz as the official interpreter and personal companion of Prince Otto . Since Prince Otto was still a minor, a Regency Council took over all of Otto's duties and responsibilities, which is why they were very divided from the start.

At the beginning of 1839 he returned to Germany and accepted a position at the Humboldt University in Berlin . In spring 1840 Franz was appointed associate professor, and in 1846 he was appointed full professor.

His lectures and seminars dealt with ancient and modern Greek, Greek palaeography and epigraphy . In 1844, at the request of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. , Franz undertook a research trip to Florence and Venice in order to research the manuscripts of Oresty ( Aeschylus ) in the local libraries . On the royal. Hoftheater Berlin wanted this piece to be staged as closely as possible to the original.

Johannes Franz died in Berlin in 1851 at the age of 47. He was buried in Trinity Cemetery I in front of Hallesches Tor . The grave has not been preserved.
