Diether Roderich Reinsch

Diether Roderich Reinsch (born February 11, 1940 in Breslau ) is a German Byzantinist .

After graduating from high school in 1959 in Wuppertal, Reinsch began studying classical philology and German at the universities of Cologne , Tübingen and Athens (scholarship 1962/3) and at the Free University of Berlin , which he completed in 1967 with the state examination in classical philology. Reinsch then studied Byzantine Studies at the Free University of Berlin until 1974 and worked as a research assistant at the Aristotle Archive there. He completed his studies with a doctorate in Byzantine Studies on the subject of The Letters of Matthew of Ephesus in the Codex Vindobonensis Theol. Size 174 and became assistant professor at the seminar for classical philology there the following year. After completing his habilitation in the subjects of Byzantine and Modern Greek Philology in 1981 with the script Kritobulos von Imbros, Historien , he worked on various research projects in Berlin, Göttingen and Frankfurt am Main.

In 1986 he received a professorship for Modern Greek and Byzantine Philology at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1993 he finally accepted the call to the Free University of Berlin, where he remained professor for Byzantine Studies until his retirement in 2005.

From 1993 to 2001 Reinsch was also chairman of the Working Group of German Byzantinists , and then its deputy chairman until 2005.

In addition to Byzantine philology with a focus on Middle and Late Byzantine literature and historiography, his main research interests include handwriting and text criticism .

Diether R. Reinsch received various honors for his services to Byzantine Studies. In December 1998 he was awarded the Order of the Phoenix by the Greek President , and in May 2006 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Thessaloniki . In the same year he was also a Fellow at the Alexander Onassis Foundation in Athens, in 2007 he was a visiting professor at the University of Saint Tychon in Moscow, and in 2008 visiting scholar for Byzantine Studies at the Dumbarton Oaks Research Center . Furthermore, in 2007 Reinsch received a visiting professorship at the University of St. Tychon in Moscow.
