Paul Umlauft
Paul Umlauft (born October 27, 1853 in Meißen , † June 7, 1934 in Dresden ) was a German composer , choir conductor and accompanist as well as music critic of the late Romantic period .
Life path
Umlauft comes from a widespread family that has been traceable in Meissen since the beginning of the 18th century. His father was a sculptor and embosser at the State Porcelain Manufactory in Meißen. After childhood in Meissen, he attended the Dresden Kreuzschule and was a member of the Kreuzchor , which he led as prefect.
At the University of Leipzig , he first studied philosophy and philology before moving to the Leipzig Conservatory after the so-called volunteer year , where he was mainly a student of Carl Reinecke . During this time he worked as a conductor for various musical associations and as a music critic for the Leipziger Tageblatt and the Leipziger Tageszeitung.
From 1879 to 1883 Umlauft was a fellow of the Mozart Foundation . In 1893 Umlauft took part in a composition competition held by Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha , for which 124 scores were sent in. With his veristic opera in one act, Evanthia , premiered in Gotha on July 30, 1893 , the libretto of which he wrote himself, he achieved second place after Josef Forster , which was still awarded by the jury.
In 1916 he went to Dresden, where he was appointed royal professor in 1918 and where his handwritten legacy is now also located ( Saxon State Library ).
