Paul Zeidler (* 1548 in Schwarzhofen ; † January 29, 1627 in Neunburg vorm Wald ) was a neo-Latin poet, humanist , pastor and schoolboy .

Life

His father was the Lutheran pastor Johann Zeidler († February 5, 1567 in Kirchenthumbach ), his mother was Martha Widenmaier (born April 10, 1528 in Neunburg vorm Wald), the daughter of a councilor and probably a relative of the reformer Johann Schlaginhaufen . After his parents' marriage in October 1547, Paul was the first of 14 children. He spent his earliest youth in Neunburg vorm Wald.

His teacher - probably at the municipal Latin school in Amberg - was Andreas Pancratius. From 1567 to 1568 Zeidler studied theology in Jena . He then held positions as schoolmaster, deacon and pastor in various places in the Upper Palatinate; around 1570 as a cantor in his birthplace Schwarzhofen.

In 1572 he married Elisabeth Textoria von Bruck († 1621) and took up a position as schoolmaster in Vilseck , where he was ordained as a pastor in April 1574. He can still be traced there until 1586. He was also a deacon in Waldsassen (1579) and cantor at the Latin school in Kemnath (1585). In 1591 he was pastor in Kirchenthumbach and pastor in “Reginobacum”, which probably means Reichenbach am Regen . In 1592 he was pastor in Cham , where he apparently preached in accordance with the reformed doctrine.

From June 1596 at the latest, he was the rector of the Latin school in Neunburg, where he died in 1627 at the age of 78 in a politically and religiously turbulent period.

Afterlife

Zeidler's handwritten estate (“Monumenta varia”) is now in the possession of the Heidelberg University Library (Hs. 704). In addition to other own verses, it contains copies of inscriptions and contemporary folk songs and identifies Zeidler as a typical humanist scholar.

In Kemnath, a Paul-Zeidler-Strasse commemorates the humanist Zeidler.
