The shallow lake Paviken is the last visible evidence of an Iron Age trading post on the west coast of the Swedish island of Gotland , which was used by the Vikings between 800 and 1050 AD . Until the 10th century Paviken was a port in a sea bay, the entrance to which was about 100 m wide at the narrowest point. Due to the land elevation of around 2.5 m in the last 1000 years, the port lost its importance in the Middle Ages . The now canalised river Idå flows into the east beach of Paviken and drained the now drained Vikmoor.

history

Both Visby and Paviken and the neighboring Västergarn are among the places on the coast of Gotland, which the prehistoric Thingplace of Roma are close. At the same time or before, Bandlundeviken , Bogeviken and Fröjel were used as trading centers on Gotland . The conditions for an early port in Paviken were among the most favorable on Gotland.

The imported goods testify to contacts with the Baltic States , the Orient and the Rhineland as well as with England , Italy and Northern Scandinavia . The port was abandoned at the end of the 10th century, the place burned down. The results of this excavation were fundamental for the exploration of the early trading centers. In the 1980s the remains of a locking device were found. Paviken is now a 74 hectare nature reserve.

nature

Today the lake has an area of 0.26 km². Together with its surroundings it forms a nature reserve and Natura 2000 area, which is frequented by many birds.
