Peştera (Hungarian Pestera , German meaning about "cave") is a village in the Brașov district ( Romania ). It is part of the Moieciu municipality .

location

Peştera is located in the extreme southeast of Transylvania . It is located on the east side of the Piatra Craiului Mountains , about seven kilometers southwest of Bran Castle ( Törzburg ).

history

Josephinian land survey, 1769 - 1773

The region above the Törzburg and below the Törzburger Pass - an important Carpathian crossing - was probably settled around the end of the 17th century. The place Peştera was first mentioned in a document in 1729. It was a village of Romanian farmers and cattle herders.

After Peştera belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary , the Principality of Transylvania and Austria-Hungary until the end of the First World War , it has been part of the state of Romania since then.

population

Since the first records, the place has been shown as predominantly inhabited by Romanians . In 1850, 503 residents - all Romanians - were registered. Since its peak in 1941 (1115 people) the population has decreased. In 2002 there were still 564 residents.

traffic

Peştera is a few kilometers off the pass road between Braşov and Piteşti , which corresponds to the European route 574 and from which a road branches off to Peştera in the municipality of Moieciu (de Jos). In Moieciu de Jos there are bus connections to Brașov. The place itself has no connection to the public transport network. The nearest train station is about seven kilometers away on the Brașov – Zărneşti railway in Zărneşti .

Attractions

Peştera is the starting point for hikes in the Piatra Craiului Mountains. There are several places to stay overnight. Not far from the village is the Peştera Liliecilor cave .
