Pearl City is a city and a census-designated place on the island of O'ahu and with over 47,000 inhabitants, the second largest city in the US - State of Hawaii . It is located 11 miles from downtown Honululu on the Pearl Harbor Lagoon and is crossed by Interstate Highway H1. Pearl City is also connected to the Honolulu Elevated Railway, which is under construction, with two stops.

history

The development of the place began in the early 19th century when oysters containing pearls were found in the Pearl River. These pearls caught the attention of King Kamehameha I , who then took over the lucrative pearl trade. At the end of the 19th century, sugar cane plantations were established in the vicinity of the city, which led to the settlement of agricultural workers. After the end of the sugar cane boom in the middle of the 20th century, the economy turned to other agricultural products as well as trade and tourism.

According to the 2010 census , Pearl City has 47,698 people in 14,622 households and 7,288 families. Thus there are 3,697.5 people per km². The median household income is $ 62,036. 4.0% of the families live on the poverty line.

The average age of the population is 37 years. The age distribution is made up of 18.8% under 18 years, 13.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64 and 17.1% over 65 years.

There are elementary, middle and high schools in Pearl City. There is also the state University of Hawaii-West Oʻahu , which is part of the University of Hawaii system .
