The whorleaved louse herb ( Pedicularis verticillata ) is a species of the genus lice herbs ( Pedicularis ) within the family of the summer root plants (Orobanchaceae).

Vegetative characteristics

Whorleaved lice herb is a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 and 20 centimeters. The stem is hairy. Three to four leaves each stand in whorls on the stem. The leaf blade is pinnate and finely serrated.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from June to August. In the terminal inflorescence the flowers are close together. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic with a double flower envelope . The purple crown is two-lipped. The trimmed, beaked upper lip is 12 to 18 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12.

Occurrence

The whorleaf louse weed colonizes the limestone mountains from the Pyrenees to the Balkans at altitudes of 900 to 2800 meters. It occurs in the countries Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, on the Balkan Peninsula, in Romania, Bulgaria, Russia and in the Ukraine.

The whorleaf lice grows best on well-supplied (especially spring moors), mostly calcareous, neutral-mild, humus-rich, stony or pure loam or clay soils . The whorled louse herb is pH-indifferent. It is a character species of the order Seslerietalia albicantis, but also occurs in lower altitudes in societies of the Caricion davallianae association.
