Peigarten is a village in the municipality of Thaya in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district (Austria) with 183 inhabitants (2004).
history
The name Peigarten (once Peygarten) comes from Middle High German (Bai = The Bee).
The Peigartner first appear in a document shortly after Christmas 1200. Since Peigarten is not a farming village but a castle settlement, it has a special position among the villages that belong to Thaya. In 1838, 564 people lived in Peigarten and 168 people in Goschenreith, who were subject to the manor until 1848.
The local community Peigarten was constituted in 1854. In the years 1938 to 1945 Peigarten came to the community of Thaya. After the Second World War , the structure of the community as it existed before 1938 is restored. In 1970 Peigarten was reconnected to Thaya, and the mayor was appointed to the municipal council of the large community as mayor. Peigarten consists of the "Ortsried" with the "Veste Peygarten" and two small settlements ("Gretzl" and "Brill").
In addition to the Peigarten Castle and the Meierhof, the long street village has another 81 houses.
