Pennergame is a satirical browser game from Farbflut Entertainment GmbH. According to “ Google AdPlanner”, it was one of the 100 most popular sites on the German-speaking Internet in October 2008 and, according to the operator, has over 2.1 million accounts.

history

In May 2012, the Hamburg investment company iVentureCapital GmbH acquired a majority stake in Farbflut Entertainment GmbH.

Gameplay

The aim of the game is to let your character, a homeless person , rise from an untalented nobody to a beggar king. To achieve the goal of the game can u. a. Skills such as attack and defense can be trained and used against other players. Furthermore, the game offers the possibility of founding or joining gangs who can enter into alliances or wage wars against each other.

The most important element of the game is the development of skills, i.e. the skills of the homeless. This serves the efficiency of the player in the fight and enables the finding of new Schnorr places, new places to stay as well as new equipment. The main source of income for the bum is donations through referrer links. In addition, the player can collect returnable bottles and sell them if the proceeds vary, get hold of money in (pet) fights, commit crimes, win money by buying tickets, sell collected junk or have money paid out from the gang fund. The player has the option of owning a virtual pet that can fight for its owner. As with the other pieces of equipment, the number of available and purchasable animals increases as the game progresses.

The issue of alcohol plays an important role in the game. A high alcohol level improves the bum's mood and shortens the duration of further training, but has a negative effect on the ability to defend himself and the precision of crimes. For reasons of the protection of minors, since April 2009 alcoholic beverages have been replaced by non-alcoholic beverages during the day.

Up to 30 players can form a gang. They can then acquire joint property that gives each gang member certain advantages. Gangs can fight one another and ally with one another. In addition, there is an internal chat for the quick exchange of information with allied gangs, which is freely available to all members of the gangs concerned - as long as an alliance exists. In addition, there are special district battles for the districts of the respective cities. In addition to the highscore, a special highlight is a gang league, in which the gangs in a diamond, platinum, gold, silver, bronze and qualification league for promotion to the next higher or victory in the respective league - combined with awards for the first three gangs, apart from the qualifying league - fight.

The game takes place either in virtual Hamburg , Berlin , Munich , Cologne or on Sylt or Malle ; In November 2014, a version that takes place in the Vatican was presented, followed by an Atlantis version in March 2016. At times there were also some offshoots that play in other cities: Dossergame for English, Menelgame for Polish, Clodogame for French, Mendigogame for Spanish, Sersionline for Turkish and Bumrise for US-American players. The locations in these games are London , Warsaw , Paris , Madrid , Istanbul and New York . These versions have not been online since mid-2017.

The successor called "Pennergame 2" was started in 2013, but was no longer expanded in 2015 due to weak demand and discontinued in April 2018. The original "Pennergame 1" is still playable.

criticism

On November 14, 2008, the SPD MP Ksenija Bekeris called for the game to be stopped immediately, as it violated the dignity of the homeless. According to the Streisand Effect , the game was then known to large sections of the population through countless mentions, including in Spiegel Online and Welt Online . According to the operator, part of the revenue from the game is used through advertising and so-called “crown corks” (means of payment for premium features) to support homeless organizations in Hamburg. Operators of websites with a public comment function criticize the spamming of referrer links by players. The player receives virtual money for every click on his link.
