Perekop (Ukrainian and Russian Перекоп ; Crimean Tatar Or Qapı ; Turkish Orkapı ) is a village in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in Ukraine , more precisely on the Isthmus of Perekop, which forms the connection between Crimea and the Ukrainian mainland.

history

Perekop, whose ancient Greek name was Taphros , has always had strategic importance as the only dry transition point between the Ukrainian mainland and the Crimean peninsula. In addition, the rich salt deposits nearby made it a trading center early on. The exact date of its foundation is unknown, but there are written documents from the 1st century in which Perekop is described as a fortress with a large defensive wall. Pliny the Elder reported on plans to expand Perekops into a port city.

During the war from 1736 to 1739 , Perekop was captured by the Russian army and the fortress was destroyed as part of the advance into the Crimean Khanate , an Ottoman protectorate. As a result, parts of the Crimea with Perekop became a Russian protectorate. In 1793 the area finally became part of Russia and Perekop became the center of a district of the Tauride Governorate .

During the Russian Civil War , the Red Army stormed the fortifications of General Wrangel's White Army on the Isthmus. During the fighting, the city was completely destroyed and ceased to exist as such. Today there is a village in its place.

Since the 1930s, a new city has been built about 25 km south of Perekop, which was named Krasnoperekopsk (Russian krasny = red) in honor of the victory of the Red Army at Perekop . Names derived from this were or are also used in other places, districts or institutions on the territory of the former Soviet Union .

On April 26, 1954, the place (like the whole of Crimea) was spun off from the Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic and transferred to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic . He, together with the villages Woloschyne (Волошине) and Suworowe (Суворове) the District Municipality Suworowe which in turn a part of the municipality of Armjansk is.

Since August 24, 1991 the place belongs to Ukraine, which is independent of the Soviet Union .

Since March 21, 2014, Russia and the secessionist government of the Republic of Crimea consider Perekop to be part of Russia (see Crimean crisis and Republic of Crimea ). This is not recognized internationally by resolution 68/262 of the UN General Assembly (“Territorial Integrity of Ukraine”). Ukraine regards the territories (including the city of Sevastopol) as temporarily occupied areas of the territory of Ukraine.
