The passenger shipping company Gebr. Kolb is a German inland shipping company based in Briedern . With 23 passenger ships and a ferry company, the Kolb shipping company is currently the most important passenger company on the Moselle and one of the largest providers of excursions in Germany.

history

Founding years

The company was founded in 1921 by Peter Kolb, the son of a ferryman from Fankel , with a motorboat. The Maria , named after his wife, started regular services between Cochem , Beilstein and Briedern in 1924 . As a second boat, the Fortuna was bought in 1934 and also used in regular services and for special trips. In 1937 the Brunhilde , named after the daughter, was used for the Moselle rides of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The time before the Second World War was characterized by a good economy for the still young passenger company, which was due to the increased tourism on the Moselle.

Chaos of war

Due to the chaos of the war, the flow of tourists on the Moselle came to a standstill and during the Second World War the company's three motor boats were sunk. Peter Kolb and his son Karl Michael were able to salvage the boats in 1945 and transfer them to Trier , where they were repaired in a shipyard . After that the boats were used as tugs and in passenger transport.

post war period

The regular service was resumed in 1950. In the following years, the shipping company was able to benefit from the increasing tourism to the Moselle.

During the expansion of the Moselle into a large shipping route (1958–1964), the ships were used again as tugs and the fleet was supplemented by the tugs Nikolaus and Bebbi . After that, the ships were no longer suitable for passenger transport and the regular service Cochem ↔ Beilstein and Traben-TrarbachBernkastel-Kues was therefore operated with two rented passenger ships.

expansion

In order to meet the increased demands of passengers, two newbuildings were commissioned for the first time from a Cologne shipyard in the 1960s. They entered service in 1966 as Traben-Trarbach and in 1967 as Maria von Beilstein . In 1975 the city of Zell and in 1976 the Moselland were acquired.

The Trier tour company H. Mendgen was bought with the ship Zurlauben in 1980 and another passenger ship named Sankt Michael was bought in the summer . As the third new building, the coat of arms of Cochem was put into service as the new flagship in 1986 . In the following years more ships were bought (see fleet list).

Since 1999, the Cochem tour company Rudolf Botsch GmbH with the two ships Undine and Undine II has also been part of the Kolb brothers' fleet.

With the takeover of Reeser Personenschifffahrt, the shipping company has also been offering tours on the Lower Rhine with the ships Stadt Rees and Germania since 2016 .
