Peter Atkinson (born September 13, 1924 in Middlesbrough , † 1972 ibid) was an English football player .

Career

Atkinson played as a center forward during his school days , only when he played for the Port Clarence Social Service Center, he temporarily moved to the goalkeeping position and played between the posts from then on. After a stay with Billingham Synthonia in the Northern League , he came to Hull City as a test player in May 1947 and convinced the reserve team in a 2-2 draw against those of Notts County .

Due to the onset of winter in early 1947 championship games were held until June and so Atkinson came under coach Major Frank Buckley only shortly after his appearance on the reserve team on May 24, 1947 in a 0-1 home defeat against Oldham Athletic to his debut in football League Third Division North . At Hull, Billy Bly , Cyril Hannaby and Joe Carter had already been allowed to try their hand at goal during the season . The game was described by the press as City's “most boring game of the season”, in which “the only bright spots were the bravura of Peter Atkinson, the 22-year-old amateur goalkeeper and the tireless work of Meens on the center stage”. He was also in the goal of Hull City in the last two games, also home games, against AFC Barrow (1-0) and AFC New Brighton (1: 1).

For the 1947/48 season Atkinson was part of Hull's professional squad, but Bly was given preference at the start of the season. When he injured himself in training in October 1947, Atkinson was used again. After two wins without conceding a goal (5-0 against Hartlepools United and 1-0 against AFC Gateshead ), a 3-0 home defeat against Darlington FC , in which he "sometimes misjudged", was his last appearance. On the following day he was replaced by Hannaby and Atkinson had to be content with a use in the reserve team. At the turn of the year 1947/1948 Atkinson, like his competitor Hannaby, was placed on the transfer list, on which he was still on in March 1948.
