Karl-Heinz Janzen (* 23. January 1926 in Dortmund , † 12. March 2016 ) was a German trade union functionary . In his highest position he was second chairman of IG Metall .

Live and act

Janzen was born in Dortmund in 1926 as the son of machine fitter Bernhard Janzen and his wife Anna, née Lauxtermann. After graduating from high school, he completed both an apprenticeship as a model carpenter and a REFA training course. He then worked from 1949 to 1957 as a model carpenter at L. & C. Steinmüller in Gummersbach , which had trained him from 1946 to 1948 before his REFA year. In 1949 he also joined IG Metall. Through his work as a shop steward from 1950 he developed his political commitment, which in 1957 led to his joining the SPD .

At the same time, he switched from his learned profession to a new area of work, namely in the administration of IG Metall, where he shortly afterwards held the position of secretary . Then in 1963 he took over the duties of the first authorized representative of the Gummersbach office. For a year he was an honorary member of the IG Metall board. He was elected executive board member in 1972. This involved moving to Frankfurt am Main. He lived in the Niederrad district .

In the mid-1970s he was also on the board of directors of the Federal Employment Agency .

In the late 1970s, he was mainly concerned with the subject of lockouts , the countermeasure taken by employers in the event of strikes , which he regarded as illegitimate . On the other hand, his main concerns in the 1980s were the humanization of the world of work and the coping with the consequences of technological innovations such as the threat of job loss through rationalization . He succeeded in raising the status of social policy in the internal trade union discussion. He wrote the foreword to Siegmar Mosdorf's book The Sociopolitical Challenge . The change of government in 1982 contributed to the aggravation of the situation , because the social policy of the Federal Government Helmut Kohl gave him cause to speak of "socio-political vandalism", which had to be tackled. Furthermore, uniform health insurance was an important concern for him.

In September 1986 Janzen was nominated for the post of second IG Metall chairman and was elected to this position at the union's federal congress the following month - with an unexpectedly poor result, however. His term of office was only three years, because before the IG Metall Congress in Berlin in October 1989 he decided not to run again for reasons of age. His successor as second chairman was the tariff expert Klaus Zwickel . Up to this year there had been six revised editions of his guideline Die Einigungsstelle under the Works Constitution Act , which first appeared in 1973. After his retirement , Janzen still acted as chairman of the member exclusion committee.

Karl-Heinz-Janzen, who returned to Schnellenbach in his Oberberg homeland in 2015, died on March 12, 2016.
