Peter Arnold Büchner (born March 5, 1943 in Heidelberg , † March 25, 2009 in Tunisia ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life and political career

Peter Büchner, who was of Protestant faith, studied after graduating from high school in Speyer at the Pedagogical University in Kaiserslautern and became a teacher at the Speyer settlement school. He became a member of the SPD in 1964 and was chairman of the Palatinate Young Socialists for four years. At the age of 26 he was elected to the Speyer city council. On October 12, 1971, he replaced Wilhelm Dröscher as the youngest member of the German Bundestag . In the 1972 election he won the direct mandate in the Neustadt-Speyer constituency . After that he was a member of the German Bundestag until 1990 and again from June 10, 1991, when he replaced Rose Götte , until 1994. He was particularly interested in sports politics, and for almost 23 years he was the sports policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) belonged Buchner from 1973 until 1,991th From 1979 to 1982 he was Chairman of the Committee on Social and Health Policy. From 1994 onwards, Büchner was President of the Palatinate Sports Federation , but resigned his position after a vote of no confidence in 1997.

On March 25, 2009, Peter Büchner, who was on a golf vacation in Tunisia, was found dead in his hotel room. Initially, an accidental death was suspected. During the later autopsy , however, a fracture of the hyoid bone was found, which cannot have come from a fall. The Tunisian investigative authorities took two young men into custody, from whom Büchner's stolen valuables were found during a search. The suspects made partial confessions. The Tunisian perpetrator was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in 2012 in the third instance for robbery and murder, and his brother, who was accused of aiding and abetting, was released.
