Peter Buck (cellist)

Peter Buck (* 1937 in Stuttgart ) is a German cellist . Since 1975 he has been teaching cello and chamber music at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart . Buck played the cello in the Melos Quartet for 40 years .

Life

Education and orchestral work

Peter Buck was born in Stuttgart in 1937 as the son of the Stuttgart piano professor Paul Buck. He received his first musical training from the cellist of the Wendling Quartet Alfred Saal and his son Gerhard Saal. Later he studied at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart with Alfred Gemeinhardt and Ludwig Hölscher . He then deepened his studies with Pierre Fournier . In 1961 Buck was a founding member and until 1967 first solo cellist of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn under Jörg Faerber .

Melos Quartet

In 1965 he was a founding member and until its dissolution in 2005 the only cellist of the Melos Quartet.

Teaching

From 1975 Peter Buck worked as a lecturer for string quartet playing and since 1980 as professor for violoncello and chamber music at the Stuttgart University of Music. In October 2004, he was appointed visiting professor at the Shenyang City Music Academy in China . Former teachers and students have come together within the Society of Friends of the Stuttgart University of Music under the mediation of Peter Buck and have been organizing the so-called alumniade with concerts by former students and teachers, who also make themselves available to the next generation of students in master courses. Buck is a sought-after juror and lecturer at international competitions and masterclasses.

Oberstdorf music summer

Peter Buck founded the Oberstdorfer Musiksommer in 1992 as artistic director. This international classical music festival in the Allgäu combines intensive promotion of young talent, consisting of master classes and various concert stages for young musicians, with a series of top-class concerts.
