Sir Peter John Cosgrove , AK , MC (born July 28, 1947 in Sydney ) is a former Australian officer. He was Governor General of Australia from March 28, 2014 to July 1, 2019 .

Life

In 1965, Cosgrove joined the Australian armed forces . In 1968 he graduated from the Royal Military College Duntroon . With the 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (RAR) he went to Malaysia as a lieutenant . Shortly afterwards he went to Vietnam with the 9th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment, where he commanded an infantry platoon . For this he received the Military Cross in 1971 . In 1980 Cosgrove was awarded the Australian National Medal. In the following years he worked as a trainer in the Infantry Center. In the mid-1980s, Cosgrove commanded the 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment and was accepted as a member of the Order of Australia in 1985 . During that time he was in the United States , Great Britain, and India . In 1990 Cosgrove became Director of Infantry and Commander of the Infantry Center. In 1997 he became commander of the Royal Military College Duntroon.

After the independence referendum in East Timor in 1999 , there was a serious wave of violence by pro-Indonesian militias . As Major-General, Cosgrove headed the International Armed Forces East Timor (INTERFET) , which after the withdrawal of Indonesia's armed forces restored peace and order in the country and gained international fame. For his services in East Timor , he received the Companion des Orders of Australia award , was promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed Chief of Army . In 2001 Cosgrove was named Australian of the Year and received the Centenary Medal .

Of 3 July 2002 and the third to his dismissal to retire in July 2005 Cosgrove served as General Commander of the Armed Forces of Australia ( Chief of the Defense Force ). On March 23, 2006, he was appointed by the Queensland government to head the task force to rebuild communities devastated by Cyclone Larry. The storm caused severe devastation near Innisfail in northern Queensland. In recognition of his work, the new suburb in the Bohle Plains of Townsville is to be named after Cosgrove.

In 2009, Peter Cosgrove received an honorary doctorate from the Australian Catholic University . He has been the university's chancellor since November 29, 2010.

On January 28, 2014 Buckingham Palace and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced his appointment as Governor General-designate of Australia. On March 28, 2014, he took his oath of office, succeeding Quentin Bryce .

In 2006, Peter Cosgrove published his autobiography.

Peter Cosgrove is the son of an Australian warrant officer and is married. Cosgrove has three sons of her own. One of his sons was slightly wounded in Iraq in 2005 . Cosgrove lives in Sydney .
