Peter Gummer (born November 30, 1940 in Offenburg ; † May 10, 2019 ) was a German judge ; he was the last president of the Bavarian Supreme Court before its reintroduction in 2018.

Life

After completing his legal training , Gummer joined the public service of the Free State of Bavaria in 1967 . In alternating roles, he was initially active in the Ministry of Justice , later as a judge and public prosecutor , and again in the administration of justice . Here he last headed the personnel department from 1987 to 1991 and was responsible, among other things, for the delegation of Bavarian judges to the courts of the new federal states after reunification.

In 1991 he was appointed Vice President of the Bavarian Supreme Court and in 2000 , he was appointed President of Horst Tilch's successor .

During Gummer's tenure as president, the Bavarian state government decided to abolish the court. Gummer, who had campaigned vehemently for the preservation of the “Bavarian Supreme”, took this as an opportunity to apply for his retirement before reaching the age limit . He was retired on December 31, 2004 and adopted with a ceremony on January 26, 2005. Since the court continued to deal with old cases until June 30, 2006, the previous Vice President Hartwig Sprau took over the management of the court without being promoted to President. Gummer thus remains in the history of the last President of the Bavarian Supreme Court before its re-launch in the 2018th

In addition to his judicial work, Gummer also took part in the legal discourse , where he is known to the legal professional public primarily as a co-author of a widespread commentary on the code of civil procedure .
