Peter Heinrich Happel

Peter Friedrich Heinrich Happel (born March 26, 1813 in Arnsberg , † May 23, 1854 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter.

Life

He was the brother of Friedrich Happel and studied between 1829 and 1837 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . The main teacher was Johann Wilhelm Schirmer . Happel was also his master student from 1840 to 1843. Carl Friedrich Lessing also had an influence on him . In 1842 he set up his own studio. He lived in Munich for a short time and went on some study trips. But mainly he lived in Düsseldorf. He was a founding member of the Düsseldorf Artists 'Association for Mutual Support and Help and the Malkasten Artists' Association .

He made a name for himself primarily as a landscape painter. The first pictures were rather dark and melancholy. Later her mood was cheerful. Some of his best works include some summer landscapes. At the time he was even referred to as the “painter of the German summer.” He painted landscapes from the Rhineland , the Odenwald and the Sauerland, among others . The following were described as noteworthy: "Sauerland region" (1837), "Gebirgslandschaft bei Regen" (1839), "Parthie aus dem Isarthal" (1840), "Moorgegend" (1848), a harvest picture with reapers and another with one passing procession as well as "The way to the village with peasants coming from the church."

Happel was represented at the Berlin academy exhibitions from 1836 to 1848. Various works were purchased and raffled off by the art association for the Rhineland and Westphalia .
