Friedrich Happel
Friedrich Happel (born May 23, 1825 in Arnsberg ; † July 5, 1854 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter of the Düsseldorf School .
Life
Happel was the brother of the landscape painter Peter Heinrich Happel . From 1838 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Due to a lack of financial means he had to finish his studies in 1841. He lived for a long time as a guest of the family of the Barons von Fürstenberg at Herdringen Castle . There he conducted intensive nature studies. In particular, he, an avid hunter and good marksman, devoted himself to hunting game. He returned to Düsseldorf, where he belonged to the artists' association Malkasten , and often painted pictures of wild animals. The pictures of the life of the foxes are particularly numerous. He also painted other animals, dead game and hunting scenes. Within the Düsseldorf School, he was particularly noted for the fact that, alongside Siegmund Lachenwitz, he was the first artist in this group to turn to the genre of animal and hunting painting. The landscape of the Arnsberg Forest was often depicted as part of his genre paintings . He exhibited at numerous exhibitions in the 1840s and 1850s. In 1848 a portfolio of lithographs with the title “Jagd-Scenen” appeared in Arnsberg. The Swiss painter Pierre de Salis-Soglio was trained by him in the years 1852/1853 .
