Peter Herfert

Peter Herfert (born June 14, 1935 in Dessau ; † November 2, 2017 in Greifswald ) was a German prehistorian .

Life

Peter Herfert already had contact with the preservation of monuments in his youth. After attending school, he completed an apprenticeship as an electrician . He got his first job at the State Museum for Prehistory in Halle (Saale) , where he initially worked as an excavation technician and restorer . He was very interested in prehistory and early history (prehistory) and geology and began studying at the University of Halle .

After graduating as a prehistoric graduate, he moved to the Kulturhistorisches Museum Stralsund in 1961 . From 1970 to 1984 he worked there as museum director and as such was responsible for the redesign of the permanent exhibition and the redesign of numerous special exhibitions. At the same time he devoted himself to archaeological excavations and published about them. He was particularly interested in the cultural history of the island of Rügen , whose research became part of his life from then on. His discoveries included numerous barrows and several Slavic wooden boats . His documentation of over 400 Slavic settlement, burial and treasure sites on Rügen is particularly commendable.
