Peter Mönnig

Peter Mönnig (born February 21, 1955 in Cologne ) is a German sculptor. He lives and works in his hometown and in Tbilisi / Georgia.

Life

After graduating from high school in Cologne, Mönnig studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1973 to 1978 , with Fritz Schwegler, Irmin Kamp , Peter Kardia and Joseph Beuys , among others . In parallel to the master class in sculpture, he received a scholarship for the studio program of MoMA PS1 in New York City . He was co-organizer of the Real Estate Show and in 1980 co-founder of the free gallery ABC No Rio . In 1981 he completed his art studies with Werner Spies (also in Düsseldorf ). From 1981 to 1982 he studied post-graduate with the DAAD at the Royal College in London . In 1982 he worked with the DFJW in Paris . From 1986 to 1988 he was visiting professor at the Art Academy in Münster . Today Mönnig works as a freelance artist and curator in Cologne and Georgia .

Mönnig is a Rotarian member and founded the “Rotary Art Series” for Rotary International in 2008, which presents art and architecture at different exhibition locations, such as Clegg & Guttman 2011, Gilbert & George 2012, Lawrence Weiner , Kati Faber with an homage to Lawrence Weiner 2010 and Thomas Huber 2009. In May 2013, the fifth exhibition in the Art Series presented artists connected to the New York scene. In 2019, the work of the photographer Victor Dahmen was presented in his studio at Cologne-Ehrenfeld train station. The proceeds go to charitable purposes.

In 2015 he moved to the Tbilisi International Rotary Club for cultural cooperation with the “Peter Moennig Foundation” set up in 2012 under private law. With the Tbilisi Development Fund in Georgia, six architecture and art prizes are awarded annually in a competition Modeling the Future . On the national St. George's Day , November 23rd, the winners were presented in the city hall of the capital Tbilisi . The winning design is carried out.

Mönnig became known in the early 1980s for his approach to using systems-theoretical concepts for installations . His World Trade Center work , his project with Bogomir Ecker: Sculpture - Cologne / Ehrenfeld , as well as the Wall-Hall-A during the international architecture exhibition in 1986 at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin became famous.
