Peter Neumann (church musician)

Peter Neumann (born March 8, 1940 in Karlsruhe ) is a German church musician , conductor and choir director.

Born in Karlsruhe as the son of a pastor (together with twin brother Martin), Neumann studied church music and orchestral conducting in Karlsruhe , Heidelberg , Berlin and Paris . In Berlin he was taught how to play the organ by Michael Schneider . After Schneider took up a professorship for organ in Cologne in 1965, Neumann became his assistant in Cologne in 1967 and then filled the church musician position at the Carthusian Church in Cologne. As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , he studied in Paris with Gaston Litaize and briefly with Olivier Messiaen . In the field of orchestral conducting, Neumann was significantly influenced by his teacher Sergiu Celibidache .

In Cologne he directs the Cologne Chamber Choir and the Collegium Cartusianum. Since then he has been working closely with these ensembles in Cologne and has performed many sacred works. Neumann concentrated on works from so-called early music through to romanticism. He recorded works by Claudio Monteverdi , Heinrich Schütz , Johann Sebastian Bach , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Johannes Brahms and other composers on sound carriers. In 1982 Neumann won the Gran Premio Città di Arezzo with the Cologne Chamber Choir , which made the choir known abroad, especially in Italy.

Until March 2005 he was head of the Charterhouse Choir . In addition to his work as a conductor, he taught as a professor for organ at the Cologne University of Music . Neumann lives with his partner in the southern part of Cologne. In 2015 he was awarded the Bach Medal of the City of Leipzig.
