Peter Schießl (born July 7, 1943 in Munich ; † July 3, 2017 in Lærdal , Norway ) was a German civil engineer . He was a professor for materials science and testing at the Technical University of Munich .

biography

Schießl studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Munich from 1962 to 1967 and then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Solid Construction. In 1973 he received his doctorate (dissertation on the question of the permissible crack width and the required concrete cover in reinforced concrete construction with special consideration of the carbonation of the concrete ). He then headed the application technology department and was deputy director at the IBS Institute for Reinforcing Steel in Munich.

In 1985 he succeeded Karlhans Wesche as professor for building materials science and head of the institute for building research at RWTH Aachen University . There he headed the Institute for Building Materials Research (ibac) at RWTH Aachen University with Rainer Sasse until 1998 . Then he was professor for building materials science and materials testing at the Technical University of Munich and head of the building materials department in the materials testing office for the building industry as the successor to Rubert Springenschmid . There he founded the Center for Building Materials and Materials Testing (cbm) and integrated his chair and that for mineral engineering , which he had initiated, as well as the Building Materials Testing Office (MPA) into it. He founded the course building materials engineering at the Technical University of Munich; later it became the master's degree in building materials, building chemistry and repair. In 2008 he retired.

In 2000 he was co-founder of the engineering office Schießl Gehlen Sodeikat.

Since his dissertation, Schießl has dealt with the design of reinforced concrete for durability . His research on this was also included in DIN 1045, which he criticized in its 1972 version as insufficient for an appropriate service life of the structure with regard to the required minimum concrete cover and crack width limitation. His recommendations were reflected in the version of DIN 1045 from 1988. In the international committee he contributed to a design for durability according to the ultimate load method for international standards.

Schießl also dealt with environmental compatibility (for example resistance to sulfates ) and other properties of aggregates in concrete, especially hard coal fly ash .

Honors and memberships

In 2005 he received the Emil Mörsch Memorial Medal . In 2007 he received the Swedish Concrete Award and in 2008 the Medal of Honor from fib (Fédération internationale du béton).

From 1997 to 2004 he was chairman of the German Committee for Reinforced Concrete (DAfStb).

He received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2004 and was an honorary doctor of the Bauhaus University Weimar (2003).
