Peter Schweri (born June 20, 1939 in Dietikon ; † November 25, 2016 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter, draftsman, object artist, photographer and, from 2008, a musical composer. He is a representative of Zurich constructivism .

life and work

After an apprenticeship as a structural draftsman from 1956 to 1959 at the Gewerbeschule Zürich, Schweri studied from 1959 to 1960 at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich with Hansjörg Mattmüller and from 1960 to 1961 for a few months in the graphics class with Josef Müller-Brockmann . His drawing and artistic talent led Paul Gredinger , advertising agent at the GGK agency (Gerstner and Kutter) to hire him in 1962 to produce works of art to cultivate the agency's artistic image. In the 1960s he dealt intensively with photography and film art. Films were made for various clients in studios in Milan, Zurich and Paris. During this time he also worked as an interior designer. In 1967 he produced the first art film (video clip forerunner) for a discotheque in Milan and created a light show with film material and slide shows, which was shown synchronously on three screens in the Black Out nightclub in Zurich-Kloten. From 1968 to 1976 Peter Schweri lived repeatedly in the Ticino village of Carona in the artist community around Meret Oppenheim , David Weiss ; Markus Raetz , Urs Lüthi , Christoph Wenger, Anton Bruhin u. a. and devoted himself intensively to the study of drawing. Countless drawings in a wide variety of techniques date from this time and are in his estate. From 1974 to 1976 he also managed the first specialty shop for macrobiotic and biodynamic nutrition in Switzerland: Mr Natural. The business was known far beyond the country's borders and was a forerunner of today's organic shops.

From 1975 he traveled to Greece, Egypt and the Sudan and made extensive trips to Greece, France and Egypt from 1977 to 1983. In Greece he devoted himself to windsurfing for a year on a board he made himself. From 1984 to 1989 he traveled extensively in his van (Mercedes D190), which he removed by hand so that he could sleep and live in it. Schweri was a thinker and researcher. His knowledge of the existence of the "Universal Skeleton of Art" led him to invent the "ArtCode86" in 1986. Creating picture compositions with conditions: that was what interested and captivated Schweri. The head of the graphic collection at ETH Zurich, Paul Tanner, organized the group exhibition “Kicking boxes billiard” at ETH Zurich in the summer of 1994 and introduced Schweri to the computer scientist Jürg Gutknecht in the run-up to the exhibition . So it happened that from 1994 to 2001 he had a job in the computer center of the ETH Zurich. Together with Jürg Gutknecht, he developed the “Sakkara” system for the purpose of writing scores of typical constructive Peter Schweri image compositions for display on the computer and on the Internet. The creation of the first dynamic, constructive works of art was now possible, and Schweri coined the new, very own art term "Dynamic Art", the creation of the interactive totem. After 3 years of intensive study of how the Internet works, he became a recognized Internet expert in 1997 at the Institute for Computer Systems at the ETH in Zurich. In the same year he worked out his first own Internet site and put it on the net. By 2001 he continued to develop his “Dynamic Art” on the Internet, the shape of which can change fundamentally every second and whose expiry time, depending on the constellation of the totem, can range from a few seconds to many billions of years. Due to a Caldwell-Luc operation , which he underwent in childhood without anesthesia, his eyesight steadily deteriorated. In 1999 his eyesight was still 5%. Nonetheless, he continued to work on all his art systems without outside help and in 2001 created a new, refined “Dynamic Art” Internet site. Schweri went completely blind in 2002 at the age of 63; he died on November 25, 2016 in Zurich; the artist Stella Diess manages his estate.

WirsindKunst: Peter Schweri · Stella Diess 2006

In summer 2005 Schweri met Stella Diess (birth name: Esther Bettina Diess) daughter of actress Miriam Spoerri and actor Karl Walter Diess , as well as niece of Daniel Spoerri / Theophil Spoerri . A close artistic collaboration arose until Schweri's death in 2016. Schweri · Diess worked together under the label «Wirsindkunst» from 2005, creating their joint website of the same name, on which they show their work in virtual space. As a blind man, it was Schweri's wish to transfer his concept «Images with conditions» (ArtCode86) to the tonal level and to work out «musical compositions with conditions» . In 2008, Schweri · Diess began to set up a private music studio in Schweri's apartment, in which they created their music under the label “Wirsindmusik” and presented it on the website of the same name. As a blind man, Schweri first had to learn the Yamaha Motif XS8 MusicWorkstation and Stella had to familiarize herself with post-production on the computer. A first CD with 6 compositions was created in 2009 as well as the CD "Motion - Peter Plays For Stella" (75'05, played live). In 2012 the CD "Metronmotion" was created with 8 compositions. Peter Schweri played the piano, researched and fine-tuned tone combinations, as he used to do as a painter with his pictures.

“As a visual artist, I developed my own visual language in the awareness of the 'universal skeleton of art'. In 1986 I invented ArtCode86, a self-contained group of 1296 images based on the figure of the double square. I painted some of them on canvas. At that time I didn't think that I would ever be able to visualize the full ArtCode86. "
