Peter Seyffarth (born September 7, 1939 in Jena ; † May 27, 2010 in Rostock ) was a German engineer. With his research on advanced welding process technologies , he prepared their introduction in shipbuilding in the GDR . From 1994 he brought his great scientific and technical skills to the Welding Training and Research Institute in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . He is considered a recognized scientist worldwide in the field of welding technology processes. In his field he published about 270 scientific papers in journals and as monographs .

Live and act

From 1957 to 1962 he studied shipbuilding at the University of Rostock with a degree in engineering. He then worked as a research assistant at the GDR Ship Revision and Classification (DSRK) in Zeuthen in the area of building supervision at VEB Warnowwerft Warnemünde , Volkswerft Stralsund and Neptunwerft Rostock . From 1964 to 1965 he took over as a scientific assistant at the Institute for Materials Science and Welding Technology at the University of Rostock, holding student exercises in the subjects of materials testing and metal science. He obtained his qualification as a welding engineer in 1965.

From 1965 to 1970 he was given a lectureship in welding technology in the sections of ship technology, agricultural technology, socialist business administration and the industrial institute at the University of Rostock . He also worked on the preparation of expert reports in the field of industrial aid and was active in working groups of the Chamber of Technology (KdT) and other operational groups. On July 4, 1970, he obtained his doctorate A as Dr.-Ing. at the University of Rostock at the Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology (Dean Prof. F.-H. Lange) with the topic contribution to the application of ZTU diagrams . In 1970 he worked as a senior scientific assistant in the field of production engineering and welding technology in the ship technology section at the University of Rostock, where he was also appointed head of a research group, the corresponding scientific area and a laboratory for production technology and welding technology. In 1971 he completed a six-month additional course in welding in shipbuilding in Leningrad , where he held guest lectures for four weeks in 1974 and 1977. In 1972 he passed the state examination as a university teacher and in 1974 the state examination as a specialist translator for the Russian language.

In 1978 he received his doctorate B as a habilitation for Dr. sc. techn. habil. at the University of Rostock with the topic Influence of the chemical composition and the cooling time on the transformation behavior and the mechanical-technological properties of unalloyed and low-alloy steels under the influence of thermal welding cycles . With the appointment as a university lecturer for welding technology in 1979, he took over the management of the scientific field of manufacturing and welding technology and the specialization of shipbuilding technology at the University of Rostock. In 1985 he was appointed associate professor. In 1986 he completed a six-month research stay at the Technical University of Budapest on the subject of physical metallurgy .

He was appointed full professor at the chair for material and welding technology in the shipbuilding section in Rostock in 1989. From 1990 to 1992 he worked as director of the ship technology section and as the department spokesman for mechanical engineering and ship technology at the University of Rostock. He graduated as a European welding engineer in 1992. From 1993 he took over the management of the Center for Quality Assurance in Material and Welding Technology eV in Rostock. He founded the Welding Training and Research Institute Mecklenburg-Vorpommern GmbH in 1994, which he also ran as managing director. From 2004 he was head of research and development for the company Ingenieurtechnik und Maschinenbau GmbH (IMG) in Rostock.
