Peter Simon , (born April 4, 1967 in Mannheim ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and was a member of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2019 .

Life

After studying law at the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg , Simon started as a lawyer at the legal office of the Mannheim city administration, where he represented the city of Mannheim in court negotiations. In 1996 he became the personal advisor and legal advisor to the First Mayor, Norbert Egger, and was responsible for setting up structured EU funding applications, setting up and managing the project group for the introduction of the EURO, and looking after municipal investments. From 1999 to 2007 he headed the European office of the city of Mannheim, which he set up, and was responsible for the implementation of international EU-funded projects, the implementation of EU regulations in administration and municipal participations, the external representation of the city council e.g. B. at the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) and the elaboration of municipal positioning in relevant EU legislative proposals. In addition, Simon was a lecturer for European law at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University from 2000 to 2009 . From 2001 to 2009 he was also entrusted with setting up and chairing the European coordinators group at the Baden-Württemberg City Council . As a representative of the German municipal umbrella organizations , Simon was involved in the Federal Foreign Ministry in 2002 and 2003 in drafting the EU constitution . From 2007 until his election to the European Parliament, he was head of economic development for the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region .

Simon was chairman of the local SPD association Mannheim-Feudenheim and a member of the SPD district executive committee in Mannheim.

In 2004, Simon ran for the European Parliament, but missed out on position 33 on the list. In the 2009 European elections , Simon was elected as a Member of Parliament and re-elected in 2014. From 2014 to 2019 he was Deputy Chairman of the Economic and Monetary Committee ( ECON ). As spokesman for the social democratic parliamentary group , he has also been in charge of coordinating their fight against tax avoidance , tax evasion and money laundering since 2015 . First in the two EP special committees against tax avoidance TAXE 1 and 2 ( Tax Rulings and "Lux Leaks Committees") then in the committee of inquiry into the Panama Papers (PANA) and then in the special committee against financial crime (TAX3). In both areas he was the coordinator of the S&D . Since 2014, he has also been Vice President of the Intergroups "Public Services" (services of general interest) and "URBAN" (sustainable urban development).

From 2013 to 2018, Simon was shadow rapporteur and co-negotiator of the social democratic group for the 4th and 5th AMLD (Anti-Money Laundering Directive) and from 2010 to 2014 rapporteur and negotiator of the European Parliament for the current DGS legislation (Deposit Guarantee Schemes Directive). From 2016 to 2019, Simon was rapporteur and negotiator for CRD V / CRR II (Capital Requirement Directive and Capital Requirement Regulation).

Simon was also a member of the European Parliament's delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council, a deputy member of the delegation for relations with Israel and an alternate member of the Committee on Regional Development. Until 2014 he was also a member of the European Parliament's delegation for relations with the Korean Peninsula.

In 2019, Simon missed the re-entry into the European Parliament. In 2020 he became the representative of the German Savings Banks and Giro Association at the European Union.
