Peter Staatsmann is a German theater director , author , dramaturge and theater director.

Life

After studying literature and religious studies (for many years he studied with the Berlin religious scholar Klaus Heinrich) and a doctorate in German studies, statesman worked and assistant director for BK Tragelehn , Frank Castorf and Wolfgang Engel . Since 1990 he has been a director a. a. at the Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin , at the Landestheater Tübingen , at the German National Theater Weimar and at the German Theater Berlin . Between 1994 and 1996 he was acting director at Theater Nordhausen.

In addition, statesman was a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin , at the Bavarian Theater Academy , at the University of the Arts Berlin and at the University of Leipzig . He also works as a translator and has published several theater books as an author.

Since September 2013 he has been the artistic director and manager of the Rottweil room theater.

Working method

In recent years statesman has written and developed his own plays on explosive topics such as right-wing populist tendencies "If the boat tips to the left, I sit to the right", about Europe, the perception of feelings - for adults as well as children. His non-theatrical way of working focuses on the actors, mixes music theater and acting in crossover productions, brings together professionals and amateurs of different nationalities and he always works out inner psychological processes in a plastic manner. Two years after the premiere, the AfD made the play "When the boat tips to the left, I sit to the right" in 2019 on the subject of a parliamentary question and a cultural-political debate in the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg. The accusation against the theater, which was one of the first to deal with right-wing populism before the 2017 federal elections , was "breach of the duty of neutrality".

Quotes

“We can state: just like the horror scenario of Melanie Klein and her school, the dramatic continuation of Sigmund Freud's school, the horror scenario of Heiner Müller is the analytical depth probe of contemporary theater. This mirror-image correspondence, by virtue of which the psychotic blocks of Müller's texts and the well-known undead revenants who populate his stage, are painfully sharp and can be represented, makes Peter Statesmann's Theater of the Unconscious a key work of modern theater.
