Peter Wilhelm Stahl

Peter Wilhelm Stahl (born March 7, 1913 in Lonsee , † December 27, 2001 in Wenzenbach ) was a German pilot and aviation author.

Life

Peter Wilhelm Stahl was born in Lonsee in 1913 as the son of a self-employed master craftsman. In 1928 he started gliding . After completing an apprenticeship as an electrical engineer , he worked from 1934 to 1937 as a technical employee in the aviation weather service in Stuttgart- Böblingen. During this time, Stahl completed training as a pilot as part of reservist courses.

From 1937 to 1945 he was employed as a civil pilot at the Reich Ministry of Aviation . Between 1939 and 1945 as a reservist pilot with Kampfgeschwader 30 and Kampfgeschwader 200 , most recently first lieutenant and squadron captain . He gained flying experience on all important types of aircraft at that time. His missions took place in particular on Junkers Ju 88 , which he later addressed in one of his books. After the Second World War, he first built an independent craft business.

After founding the Bundeswehr , he joined the newly founded Air Force . In 1970 he was retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel . He then worked as an aviation journalist and as a freelance consultant in aviation technology. As an author he appeared under the abbreviated name "PW Stahl".

In the 1970s and 1980s he passed on his extensive flight experience as a flight instructor at the German Alpine Sailing School Unterwössen / Chiemgau by training aspiring glider pilots.

Flight to the North Cape

At the age of 65 years Peter Wilhelm Stahl flew with a small, only 48 kW strong motor glider , exclusively under visual flight conditions, of Unterwössen / Bavarian Alps to the North Cape and back, a total distance of 7,000 kilometers. He followed his own footsteps as a pilot in the KG 30 in World War II and, according to his own statement, contributed a little to the reconciliation with the former enemies.
