Peter Zihlmann (musician)

Peter Zihlmann (born November 28, 1977 in Sursee ) is a Swiss jazz musician (piano, composition).

Live and act

Zihlmann received classical piano lessons as a pupil, but also began to be interested in pop music and, above all, improvisation . After graduating from high school, he studied jazz piano and singing at the Lucerne School of Music from 1998 to 2003 . He then completed postgraduate studies in Amsterdam, where he also dealt with the classical piano.

In 2003 Zihlmann founded the trio Troja, which still exists today (with drummer Tobias Friedli and bassist Patrick Sommer) . The band has since released three studio albums and toured Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. With the guitarist Franz Hellmüller he formed the duo Zihlmann / Hellmüller, which released two albums and also went on concert tours. He also belongs to Keller's 10 and is documented on recordings by Conny Riebli and the world music group Ayé .

In addition to his concert activities, which also included solo appearances and extended to the theater sector, in recent years he has increasingly devoted himself to the arrangement and composition, including for his own a cappella group Pagare Insieme , but also for the program of the Circus Monti and for musical theater. In 2016 he composed for the Lucerne Jazz Orchestra . He lives as a freelance musician in Lucerne and also works as a lecturer for practical piano playing at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences.

Prizes and awards

In 2003 he won the Special Award for Best Composition with Troja at the Montreux Jazz Festival . Thanks to a grant from the Otto Pfeiffer Foundation, he wrote a suite for jazz orchestra ( Tales of the Old World ), which was co-produced with SRF2.
