Petra Mattheis (* 1967 in Moers ) is a German artist and photographer . She became known for her artistic treatment of menstruation .

Life

Mattheis studied communication design at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences from 1987 and graduated in 1994 with a diploma. From 2002 to 2006 he studied fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Mainz , also with a diploma. From 2007 to 2009 she was a master class student in media art at the University of Graphics and Book Art in Leipzig .

She works with Sascha Nau as a photographer in Leipzig under the labels Regentaucher and Wunderwesten .

Work and style

On her website BAM as well as with installations and prints, Mattheis works on the topic of menstruation , questions cultural-historical developments and the way we deal with our own body today, and promotes a free, playful approach. Each motif of the blood-red prints of her series “BAM - Become a Menstruator” corresponds to a fertile year for the artist. She makes the prints one by one by hand; the number of copies depends on the number of bleeds that have occurred in the respective year. Mattheis thus not only addresses a taboo, her works also acquire an autobiographical character.

In 2013 she and Sascha Nau began to photograph dilapidated houses in the west of Leipzig and to present them on the Regentaucher blog . Under the title Waiting Houses , a series was created in which they staged the buildings “in the Becher tradition” like portraits of people. They wanted to "capture the unique character of the building". At the same time, the website Wunderwesten was created , on which they portray people from the west of Leipzig in photographs and conversations.
