The Roman Catholic parish church of Kaumberg is located in Kaumberg in the market town of Kaumberg in the Lilienfeld district in Lower Austria . It is consecrated to Saint Michael and belongs to the Deanery Lilienfeld in the diocese of St. Pölten . The fortified church and the defensive wall with stairs are under monument protection .

Parish history

At the end of the 12th century, a Conrad de Arberch received the church "Choumperch" as a fief from the Passau bishop . After a lengthy process with the Lords of Araburg , a settlement was reached in 1256 and the Klein-Mariazell monastery took over the parish. Kaumberg was mentioned for the first time in 1280 in the Passau parish future records. After the first Turkish siege , the monastery ran into financial difficulties and sold the parish to a lord of the castle. In 1580 the parish came into the possession of a Protestant and a preacher was installed instead of a pastor . In 1622 the Protestant lord of the castle was ousted and in 1625/26 the parish was acquired by Lilienfeld Abbey .

description

North view of the parish church

The church at the entrance of the Laabach valley and in an elevated position is a former fortified church . It is partially surrounded by a defensive wall and was built in several medieval construction stages. The three-bay Gothic nave with the ribbed vault and the apse were built around 1400. The nave-wide choir has an axis deviation from the nave and a 5/8 end .

The tower in the west with three floors and a passage portal has a square floor plan and is likely to be partly the remainder of an old fortification. The spire helmet dates from 1852. Due to the effects of the war in 1945, the shingle roofing of the tower and the church was renewed in 1948.

To the north between two strut pillars is a slightly protruding Maria Lourdes chapel from the 17th / 18th centuries. It was built in the 18th century, originally thought to have a Romanesque core. In the south there is a late Gothic vestibule, as well as a sacristy and a connecting room (confessional chapel) between the two.

organ

The church was fitted with new organs in 1695, 1895 and 1993. The current organ has 13 registers on two manuals and a pedal and was built by master organ builder Friedrich Heftner .

Bells

In 1896 two new bells were consecrated, and during the First World War the bells were requisitioned for "war purposes". In 1920 the church was fitted with four new bells and again requisitioned in the course of the Second World War . In 1949 five new bells were raised again.
