history

The parish church Pfarrwerfen and the rectory date from the 15th and 16th centuries in their current form. During this time, the originally Romanesque church was rebuilt and renewed in several construction phases. The central nave was raised, a net rib vault was drawn in, the choir was expanded, the western vestibule was built and the Chapel of the Holy Helpers was added to the left aisle.

The original church was from the 12th century.

architecture

The church stands in the center of Pfarrwerfen on a hill and is surrounded by the cemetery. Together with the open vestibule in the west and the rectory connected by a flying buttress, it forms an assembly. In the north it has a tower. It is a three-aisled basilica building with a raised central nave with two low aisles.

Furnishing

Interior and high altar

The monumental fresco of St. Christopher dates from the early 16th century, it was renovated in 1998.

The three late Gothic winged altars were erected using the existing stock as part of the renovation from 1851.

The high altar goes back to a winged altar made in the 16th century. The central statue of the Madonna and Child was created around 1500, the reliefs visible with the wings open between 1560 and 1580. The panels visible with the wings closed were created by the Lienz painter Andrä Peuerweg († 1592). The current structure is neo-Gothic from 1865.

The first helper altar in the left aisle from the workshop of Gordian Guckh was created around 1520. The original wings were stolen in 1987 and have since been replaced by replicas.

The renewed structure of the Holy Tribe altar in the right aisle shows the original statues and reliefs, which were created around 1520.
