The Roman Catholic parish church Spital bei Weitra is located in Spital in the town of Weitra in Lower Austria . The parish church of St. John the Baptist belongs to the deanery Gmünd in the diocese of St. Pölten . The church and the cemetery are under monument protection .

architecture

The church is surrounded by a cemetery. A retracted Romanesque east tower connects to the Romanesque , Gothic modified nave . In the west there is a baroque west bay of the nave with an unadorned gable facade. A Gothic choir in the width of the nave adjoins the tower to the east . To the north of the tower is a baroque sacristy extension .

The Romanesque tower has renewed coupled sound windows . The Romanesque core of the nave shows itself to the north with visible, regularly layered quarry stone masonry with two walled up arched windows. The Gothic single-lane tracery windows on the nave are partly rounded in Baroque style.

From the Romanesque building, the cross - ridge -vaulted tower yoke between two drawn-in arches, pointed arched west to the nave, and rounded and chamfered east to the choir , is preserved. The portal to the sacristy is baroque with a wooden door with Maltese crosses . The four-bay nave was rebuilt in the 15th century and has a ribbed vault in the central bays on drawn-in five-sided wall struts. The western and eastern yoke have flat vaults due to baroque extensions and changes. In the west yoke is a baroque organ gallery. The Gothic one - bay choir with a five- eighth ending around 1400/1.
