The parish church of St. Michael in the village of the same name in the municipality of Wolfsberg was probably first mentioned in 1224. The parish churches of Lading, Aichberg, and the chapel of the Himmelau monastery also belong to the parish of St. Michael .

Building description

The church is a large Gothic building with Romanesque nave walls in the core , which was changed in the late 18th century. The choir is hardly separated from the nave, and a chapel is built on the north side. Three-tiered buttresses support the south wall of the nave and the choir. The presented west tower with a Gothic core has a late baroque structure of pilasters , rectangular windows and arched sound openings and is crowned by a pointed helmet from the 19th century. A cornice with a triangular gable is located above the western portal of the tower with iron-studded door and wrought iron grille from the 18th century . The tower ground floor has a groin vault .

The nave was provided with a barrel vault in the late 18th century , which is divided into four bays by strong pilasters and stitch caps . The masonry west gallery over a pressed arch can be reached via a northern external staircase. A round-arched triumphal arch with profiled fighters connects the nave and the late Gothic three-bay choir with a three-eighth end. The ribbed vault on circular services has keystones with stonemason's marks . The coat of arms of the Bamberg canon and vice dome Johann Caspar von Lammershaim is attached above the portal to the northern sacristy . The baroque side chapel on the north side is vaulted and decorated with a stuccoed laurel wreath from the late 18th century at the top. The choir has pointed arched windows, the nave has narrow, high round arched windows; the window glass was replaced in 1902. Remains of Gothic wall paintings have been preserved on the north wall of the nave. Depicted are female saints, the Mount of Olives and the Kiss of Judas from the middle of the 14th century, above them remains of a Passion cycle and the heads of Mary and two female saints from the second quarter of the 15th century.

Facility

The baroque high altar from the end of the 17th century bears a late Gothic carved figure of the Archangel Michael from the 1520s. The altarpiece is made up of a baroque Anna-selbdritt group and a canvas picture of the Holy Trinity . Behind the high altar there is a Roman epitaph for Julius Annamus, Julia Secunda and Julia Ianuaria. The console statues in the choir date from the 19th century.

The two side altars are composed of different baroque parts and show Mary and the Heart of Jesus on the altar leaves from 1886 . Two other side altarpieces with rich acanthus carvings , made around 1700, represent Anna Selbdritt between female saints and St. Florian between holy bishops. The altar with St. George in the side chapel dates from the middle of the 18th century. The four evangelists are painted on the pulpit from the third quarter of the 18th century . The life-size crucifix was made around 1730.
