history

In 1012 St. Koloman was hanged in what is now Stockerau. His body was buried at the site of today's parish church. Soon after his death, he and his grave were venerated. After his exhumation, he was transferred to Melk in 1014 and buried there.

The parish Stockerau was probably founded in 1064 in connection with the donation of the king by Heinrich II . Bishop Berenger started the parish organization in the Babenberg area and founded five mother parishes, including Stockerau. In 1215 Pope Innocent III confirmed . the award of the parish Stockerau to the Klosterneuburg monastery by the Passau bishops, but the church was returned to the Passau bishop in 1293. During the Hussite Wars , the Stockerau people fled behind the protective walls of the church in 1426, but were mostly killed.

Since August 7th, 1784 the parish Stockerau is no longer subordinate to the Archbishops of Passau, but to the Archdiocese of Vienna . With 11,000 Catholics, it is one of the largest parishes in the Archdiocese of Vienna.

architecture

The first, Romanesque church was rebuilt or rebuilt between 1438 and 1465 (stone masonry of this church has been preserved on the pillars of the organ gallery).

Today's church was built after the Gothic nave was torn down between 1777 and 1778 in the early classical style by the Viennese master builder Peter Mollner . The church tower was added to the old church a few years earlier, from 1722 to 1725, under master mason Franz Jänggl . At 88 meters, it is the highest church tower in Lower Austria and one of the fifteen highest church towers in Austria.

The church tower was renovated in 1984 and again in 2009-2010 due to moisture.

Furnishing

The imposing high altar, which takes up the entire apse, was made by Franz Senger and Karl Müller according to a design by Martin Keller. The high altar picture is a work from 1777 by Johann Meidinger (1733–1806) and represents the martyrdom of St. Stephen.

organ

Today's organ was built by Johann Kaufmann in Vienna.
