The Church of St. Nikolaus is the Roman Catholic parish church in the community of Wundschuh in Styria . Its history can be traced back at least to the end of the 15th century, with today's church building dating from the beginning of the 20th century.

history

There was probably a wooden chapel on the site of today's church around 1100, which was later expanded. Towards the end of the 15th century there was already a brick church which was a branch church of the Hengsberg parish church . In the 17th century it became a vicariate and in 1785 an independent parish. Between 1912 and 1915, the old church building was replaced by a new building designed by Johann Baltl with baroque shapes. In 1946 and 2005 the interior was restored and in 1979 the exterior was restored. Furthermore, the chancel was redesigned in 2005.

The tower with a pointed helmet is located in the northern corner of the choir and has four bells. The rectangular, late-Gothic basement floor dates from the end of the 15th century and has a walled-in stone dating back to 1497. The three upper floors are octagonal and, like the pointed helmet, date from the time the church was rebuilt. The bells consecrated on September 22, 1915 are the St. Nicholas bell, the angelus bell, the provision bell and the train bell. On the outside wall there is a niche with a baroque statue of the Virgin Mary.

The wide, nave has four bays and the narrower, straight, closed choir has two bays. The sacristy is built as a five-eighth closure .

The late baroque high altar, which was made by Franz Karcher in 1772, has a newer base and bears the coat of arms of the Dietrichstein family . His altar sheet, painted by Anton Jandl in 1766 , shows St. Nicholas . The essay group representing the Holy Trinity and the free-standing tabernacle were made between 1914 and 1915 by Peter Neuböck and Bartholomäus Gorendscheck based on designs by Ludwig von Kurz zum Thurn and Goldenstein . The two side altars, the left one is the Mother of God altar and the right one the Sacred Heart Altar, have superstructures which partly date from 1914 and have baroque statues from the first half of the 18th century. The baptismal font has been located in one of the side chapels since 2005. The pulpit was erected at the same time as the high altar. The ship-shaped folk altar, the ambo and the session date from 2005. The stained glass windows of the church were designed by F. Koller between 1914 and 1915 based on designs by Ludwig von Kurz zum Thurn and Goldenstein. The decorative paintings were painted by Albin Reiter in 1946 . There are also some baroque statues from the 18th century as well as framed, late Baroque pictures of the Stations of the Cross from 1914 in the church.

The organ was built in 1914 by the Marburg organ builder Josef Brandl , and in 1969 Konrad Hopferwieser expanded it to 21 registers. In 2008 the organ was renovated again and equipped with a new electric console by Christian Hartinger.
