description

Vegetative characteristics

The arrow rock cress is a perennial herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The basal leaves wither only after the main flowering period, and rosette side shoots often form in their axils. The plant forms one to a few upright stems . The stem is covered in the lower section with long, simple or double-stranded, clearly stalked hair . The central stem leaves have a heart-shaped or arrow-shaped base with 1 to 2 millimeters long, stem-encompassing ears. The usually 12 to 50 stem leaves are usually much longer than the 6 to 20 millimeter long stem members. The lower and middle stem leaves are hairy on the surface.

Generative characteristics

The flowering time of the arrow rockcress in Central Europe extends from May to July . The inflorescence is 20 to 50 flowers. The 4 sepals are 2 to 4 millimeters long. The four white petals are 4 to 7 millimeters long and 0.6 to 1.5 millimeters wide at the front. The flowers have six stamens and a stylus , which is almost as wide as the ovary is on.

The pods , often over 5 centimeters long, are dense, stiff upright and more or less parallel to one another and lie on the grape axis. The longest fruit stalks are 3 to 7 millimeters long. The fruit is almost flat, usually more than 0.8 millimeters wide and green when unripe. The middle nerve of the fruit valves is only clearly visible in the lower part. The seed is winged 0.1 to 0.2 millimeters wide.

Chromosome number

Arabis sagittata is diploid. It has the chromosome number 2n = 16.

ecology

The arrow rockcress is a hemicryptophyte . The species loves lime.

distribution

The arrow rockcress is native to almost all of continental Europe except in Northern Europe and Asia. It occurs in all German-speaking countries except Liechtenstein .

In Austria , the arrow rockcress occurs in all federal states, except in Vorarlberg, scattered or rarely in the colline to montane altitude range on poor meadows and embankments. The species is endangered in the western Alpine region, in the Bohemian Massif and in the northern Alpine foothills . It occurs mainly in societies of the Festuco-Brometea class or the Origanetalia order.
