history

The Pfennig Bridge was first built in 1900 as a privately operated wooden bridge over the Aller during the German Empire . Passers-by initially had to pay a penny bridge duty, later double that amount, as the writer Hans Fallada also remembered.

The Pfennig Bridge was destroyed several times by floods until it was completely demolished in 1923 - shortly before the peak of German hyperinflation during the Weimar Republic . It was not rebuilt until 1925, again as a private investment .

At the time of National Socialism and during the Second World War , the Pfennig Bridge became the property of the city of Celle, which replaced the wooden bridge with a concrete bridge in the economic boom in 1952 .

A work of art funded by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth as part of the federal program “ Promote Tolerance - Strengthen Competence ” , which was made by the association atelier 22 as part of integrative district work together with young people, has been commemorating the bridge toll that was previously payable . On the basis of a pixelated photograph of the opposite bank, the walls at the entrance to the Pfennig Bridge were brightly painted and provided with painted coins. In 2014 the work of art was inaugurated in the presence of the local mayors Gudrun Jahnke and Katja Hufschmidt-Bergmann after it had been vandalized by paint sprayers before completion .

A lighting system has recently been installed on the bridge , with the light installation changing colors .
