features

Macroscopic features

Ripe fruit bodies emerge from a spherical " witch's egg " up to 2 cm wide, the surface of which is light gray in color and has a hint of orange. The stalk of the ripe fruit body becomes 5–8 cm high and 0.8–1.2 cm wide. It is cylindrical (narrowing towards the top), spongy, hollow, cream-colored to yellowish, but colored light orange towards the tip. At the tip of the stem is a conical, 2.5 × 2 cm large hat , which is pale orange in color, has a network-like surface and is covered by the olive-brown gleba . The gleba is foul-smelling and the smell is reminiscent of semen or raw potatoes. A cream-colored to yellow, net-like structure ( indusium ) hangs down from the underside of the cone , which does not reach the ground.

Microscopic properties

The spores are cylindrical, smooth and yellowish in color. They are 2.8-3.6 × 1.5-1.8 µm in size.

Species delimitation

Phallus flavidus resembles a large number of tropical and subtropical phallus species, which are characterized by a yellow, orange or red indusium and an equally colored pileus :

  • Phallus indusiatus f. citrinus from tropical India is very similar in color, but has a larger fruiting body and larger spores.
  • Phallus luteus from Japan is also very similar but grows much larger and has a longer indusium that extends to the ground.
  • Phallus multicolor , a pantropically widespread species, is very variable in color. Both the pileus, the stalk and the indusium, which rarely reaches the ground, are yellowish to orange in color. The fruit bodies are medium in size.
  • Phallus cinnabarinus from Taiwan has a vermilion indusium and pileus. The 10 cm long indusium hangs down from a 7–13 cm large fruiting body.

In contrast to the species already mentioned, the witch's eggs from Phallus flavidus lack the pink or purple pigments that are very common in the other species.
All phallus species mentioned above grow on the ground. In contrast, there are Phallus flavocostatus and related species (all without Indusium), which grow on rotten wood and have very small to dwarf-like fruiting bodies.

ecology

Phallus flavidus appears singly or in small groups on the bottom of ruderal areas that are overgrown with tall grass .

distribution

The species is native to the Seychelles , but has so far only been found on the island of Mahé .

useful information

Phallus flavidus is the smallest, indusiate phallus species. Phallus rubrovolvatus from Yunnan, on the other hand, is the largest "veil lady" with a height of up to 33 cm . Among the non-industrial phallus species, Phallus pygmaeus from Brazil , with only 0, 5–1 cm high, the smallest stinkhorn , while Phallus favosus from the mountains of Indonesia can grow up to 35 cm high and is therefore the largest species of the genus Phallus .
