Paul Joseph Cardinal Phạm Đình Tụng , Vietn. : Phao-lô Giu-se Phạm Đình Tụng, (born June 15, 1919 in Binh Hoa , Vietnam , † February 22, 2009 in Hanoi , Vietnam) was Archbishop of Hanoi .

Life

Phạm studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Hanoi seminary . He received on 6 June 1949, the sacrament of Holy Orders , and then worked as a pastor. In 1963 Pope John XXIII appointed him . to the bishop of Bac Ninh. The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Trịnh Như Khuê on 15 August of that year. Phaolo-Giuse Pham Dinh Tung was under house arrest from 1963 to 1990.

In 1990 he was appointed Apostolic Administrator in Hanoi. In 1994 Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Hanoi after the death of his predecessor Joseph Cardinal Trinh Văn Căn and accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria "Regina Pacis" in Ostia mare in the College of Cardinals .

His resignation from the office of Archbishop of Hanoi was granted in 2005 by John Paul II.

Act

During the period of house arrest ordered by the communist rulers from 1963 to 1990, he did not visit any of his approximately 100 parishes, but was able to maintain the diocese administration with three priests and numerous lay priests. During the 27 years of house arrest he developed his own prayer technique and wrote mystical poems and rhymes. Phạm had converted the sacred texts into a traditional Vietnamese form of poetry, which made it easier to remember the contents. His catechetical work " Lục bát " made him known in Vietnam.
