Philip William Bryce Lever, 3rd Viscount Leverhulme KG (born July 1, 1915 , † July 4, 2000 ) was a British peer and politician ( Conservative Party ).

life and career

Lever was born as the only son of William Lever, 2nd Viscount Leverhulme and his first wife Marion. He attended Eton College and studied at Trinity College of Cambridge University . During the Second World War he served in the Middle East with the Cheshire Yeomanry. There he was later an honorary colonel ( Honorary Colonel ).

After the war ended, he managed his father's estate at Thornton Manor. In 1954 he bought the Badanloch property in Sutherland . In 1949 he became Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire and remained so until 1990, making him the longest-serving Lord Lieutenant in the United Kingdom. There he was also a justice of the peace .

Lever had racehorses and was chairman ( Chairman ) of Chester Racecourse , and Senior Steward of the Jockey Club. He was a supporter of the Animal Health Trust , the veterinary research facility at Lanwades Hall, near Newmarket . He was also Chancellor of the University of Liverpool from 1980 to 1993 .

Membership in the House of Lords

After his father's death in May 1949, he inherited his title and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He gave his inaugural speech in 1976, on the subject of horse racing ; a hobby with which he occupied himself all his life.

Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 . He did not run for one of the remaining seats.

Honors

In 1967, Lever was awarded an honorary doctorate in law (LL.D.) from Liverpool University . He became an honorary Air Commodore in the service of the 663 Air Observation Post Squadron of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. He was also the bearer of the Territorial Decoration (TD).

Lever was a Knight of the Order of Saint John (K.St.J.). In 1988 he was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter .

family

On July 1, 1937, Lever married Margaret Ann Moon († 1973). They have three daughters together.

  • Hon. Susan Elizabeth Moon (* 1938), married to (Hercules) Michael Pakenham.
  • Hon. Victoria Marion Ann (* 1945), married to (1) Richard Carew Pole (2) Gordon Apsion, (3) Peter Tower.
  • Hon. (Margaret) Jane (* 1947), married to Algernon Heber-Percy.

Since Lever was the last male descendant of the 1st Viscount and died without an heir, his titles have expired.
