John Philip Sandblom (born October 29, 1903 in Chicago , United States , † February 21, 2001 in Lausanne , Switzerland ) was a Swedish surgeon and sailor .
Academic career
Sandblom initially completed his medical degree at the Karolinska Institute in 1930 , which was followed by a master's degree at Northwestern University in Chicago in 1934 . In 1944 he obtained his doctorate in medicine at the Karolinska Institute and from then on worked in pediatric surgery . As early as 1945 he became chief physician at the Crown Princess Lovisas Barnsjukhus , a Stockholm hospital for children. Five years later he became a professor at Lund University and, in 1957, he became the rector. He held this post until 1968. Sandblom retired in 1971, but continued to work as a surgeon and scientist in San Diego and Lausanne .
Sporting successes
Philip Sandblom, who was a member of the Kungliga Svenska Segelsällskapet , won the bronze medal in the 8-meter class at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam . He was a crew member of the Sylvia , which had two victories in seven races and was third behind the French boat L'Aile VI and the Dutch on the Hollandia . The Swedes were the Sylvia Although well as the Dutchman twice first, reaching as the Hollandia also twice finished second, decisive for the placement but was ultimately the number of third places at the Hollandia on three totaled, in which Sylvia contrast only at once. Sandblom was also active as an art collector and together with his wife Grace Sandblom acquired a large collection, which also included works by Renoir and Picasso .
